The Vow

By MintyVintage · April 8, 2012 · 1 Comment ·

my favourite quote from the movie actually came from Paige's mum:/-

‪ "I chose to stay with him for all the things that he had done right, and not leave for the one thing that he's done wrong.I chose to forgive him."

She said this in respond to Paige asking her why she could forgive her husband (Paige's dad) for cheating on her.

what she said struck a chord with me because although it does represent more of the older generation's thinking, it makes a lot of sense even if you apply to it in a non-cheating scenario.

I interpreted it as a reminder that even if your husband isn't the most perfect one, even if he might have done sth wrong (may not be cheating), there is still (logical) reason to stay on. your heart may say No but you can still choose to stay in the relationship because of commitment and all e right things he has done before. instead of leaving because you think one wrong overwrites all the right ones. I mean who can assure us tht they are perfect?

and to me I guess i think that marriage would be like that..after 20, 30 years tog  there would be really tough times when you have to perhaps make a stay or leave decision. be it realizing that you two are no longer happy tog or either one has changed to somewhat unacceptable to the other party. ultimately do you stick to the vow? for better and for worse?

anyway I didn't really like the focus of the movie as I felt it directed more attention on paige's recovery and strength as an individual rather than both of them trying to make it work the second time due to the vow they made. the concept of the vow was not that strong in the movie, but of course, asking someone who lost her memory to still stick to a vow she doesn't rmb making is shit tough too!

i think what the movie taught me was that two people fall in love given the right circumstances and time. but given a second chance under another not so favourable or entirely different settings, they might not have the same feelings. that's why Paige didn't fall for Leo (naturally) the second time... but the ending I guess suggested she was willing to try to fall for him again.

if i lose my memory one day, will i fall for you again?

will you? if it happens to you?

or will we be back to friends?

what a thought provoking movie.
